I love candle magick. It's one of the most accessible and powerful forms of spellwork in witchcraft, and I always leave a session feeling calm and relaxed, in mind and body.
The concept, in its most basic form, is that by focusing your intention through flame, colour, and ritual, you'll harness fire's transformative energy to manifest desires, release what no longer serves, or invite protection and clarity.
Why Candle Magick Works
Fire represents passion, will, transformation, and the spark of creation. When you light a candle with clear purpose, you're sending your energy into the universe – watching the flame dance can provide visual signs, while the burning process itself releases and grounds your spell.
Chime or taper candles are perfect for quick spells (1–2 hours). The candles supplied in my own spell kits are of this type, and will burn for approximately an hour. For longer workings however, select pillar or jar candles. These can spread your spellwork for days, or even weeks.
Colour is key. Select one that aligns with your intention (though white can substitute for any colour, at a pinch).
Candle Colour Meanings and Correspondences
Here are common associations used in witchcraft (traditions will vary slightly, so the main thing really, is to trust your intuition.):
- White - Purity, cleansing, protection, peace, healing, truth, new beginnings, lunar / Goddess energy, spirituality. (All-purpose substitute.)
- Black - Banishing negativity, protection, binding, absorbing harm, ending bad habits, reversing hexes, deep shadow work, justice.
- Red - Passion, love, lust, courage, strength, vitality, fast action, motivation, physical energy, willpower.
- Pink - Romantic love, self-love, friendship, compassion, emotional healing, gentleness.
- Orange - Creativity, success, attraction, joy, ambition, adaptability, encouragement, sudden positive change.
- Yellow - Confidence, intellect, communication, clarity, happiness, solar energy, study, divination, abundance.
- Green - Prosperity, money, growth, fertility, health, luck, abundance, nature, renewal.
- Blue - Calm, peace, healing (emotional/mental), truth, communication, intuition, protection (especially psychic), forgiveness.
- Purple - Spirituality, psychic ability, intuition, wisdom, power, ambition, third eye work, breaking addictions.
- Grey - Intuition, dreams, feminine energy, reflection, neutrality, banishing illusions.
- Brown - Grounding, stability, home, animals, material needs, friendships, locating lost items.
Basic Steps for a Simple Candle Spell
- Set your intention - Be clear and specific. For example, use "I attract loving, healthy relationships," rather than just "love".
- Cleanse your space and candle - Use smoke (Sage / Palo Santo), sound, or even just visualisation, to clear its energy.

Dress the candle (an optional but powerful extra):
- Carve symbols, or write your name, or words into the wax (writing from top to bottom to draw in, and bottom to top to banish).
- Anoint with oil – use olive or essential oils that match your intent (rub toward you to attract, away to repel).
- Roll in herbs / crystals if desired (for example, cinnamon for money, or rose petals for love).
- Place on altar - Surround with corresponding crystals, herbs, or symbols.
- Ground and centre - Breathe deeply, visualise your goal as already achieved.
- Light the candle - Write, chant or speak your intention aloud. Focus on the flame.
- Let it burn - Safely (never leave unattended). For short candles, let it burn out; for longer ones, snuff (don't blow), and relight daily until done.
- Close and dispose - Thank the spirits and elements. For banishing spells, bury, dispose in running water, or discard remnants away from the home.
Tips for Success
- Work during the correct moon phase (waxing for attracting, waning for banishing).
- Pay attention to the flame:
- Strong and steady = good energy.
- Flickering / jumpy = obstacles.
- Going out = rethink your intention.
- Combine with other tools (sigils, affirmations or crystals) for amplification.
- Always practise fire magick safety!
