Full Moon Magick: Harnessing the Peak of Lunar Power

The Goddess Hekate, standing before a huge full moon, with her three headed dog. The words Full moon magick and Harnessing the peak of lunar power, appear over a dark background.

The full moon has captivated witches, pagans, and spiritual seekers for centuries. It marks the height of the lunar cycle – a time of maximum energy, illumination, and manifestation. In many traditions, including Wicca, this phase is celebrated as an Esbat, a monthly ritual honouring the Divine Feminine, the Great Goddess, in her fullest expression as the radiant Mother. But the universal archetypal energy embodying the Moon – cycles of nature, intuition, fertility, mystery, and transformation, is not always tied to one named deity.

In Wicca she is often the Triple Goddess: Representing Maiden (new beginnings, waxing moon), Mother (fullness, power, creation — this is the phase honoured at the full moon), and Crone (wisdom, release, waning/dark moon). At the full moon, she shines as the ‘Mother’ – radiant, empowered, and at the peak of her strength.

Modern witches often simply say "Great Goddess" or "Lady Moon" without naming a specific deity, while others prefer to invoke a named lunar goddess. One that resonates with them personally, such as:

  • Diana (Roman) or Artemis (Greek) – Huntress and protector
  • Selene – Personification of the Moon itself
  • Hekate – Goddess of witchcraft, crossroads, and magick
  • Isis, Astarte, Kali, Brigid – or local folklore goddesses, of which there are many.

For those drawn to her, however, the full moon is especially potent when working with Hekate, the ancient Greek Goddess of witchcraft, magick, crossroads, and the night. As torch-bearer and key-holder, she illuminates hidden truths and guides us through liminal spaces – and as such, she is perfect for full moon workings.

Honouring Hekate at the Full Moon

Hekate is a favourite among modern witches for full moon rites. She is the Witch Mother, and under the full moon, she shines brightly as the one who lights the way through the darkness.

Simple Hekate Invocation (speak aloud under the moon):

“Hekate, Keeper of the Keys, Torch-bearer of the night, guide me at the crossroads, Illuminate my path with your wisdom and might. Hekate, be with me tonight.”

Hekate Specific Correspondences:

  • Symbols: Torches, keys, snakes, black dogs, the Strophalos (Hekate’s wheel).
  • Herbs: Mugwort, garlic, mandrake, yew.
  • Colours: Black, silver, deep red, purple
  • Offerings she enjoys: Garlic, honey, eggs, dark chocolate, red wine, keys, or three candles (representing her triple nature).

In ancient Greek tradition, garlic was one of her traditional offerings. It was commonly used during the Deipnon (her monthly meal offering, on the dark moon – though it carries over to full moon work too).

Reasons it fits her:

  • Its strong, protective, and banishing qualities align with her role as a protector and averter of evil.
  • The pungent smell and ‘fiery’ nature were thought to please her and ward off restless spirits (she’s also the goddess of ghosts and the underworld).
  • Historical texts and temple offerings frequently mention garlic for Hekate, alongside other items like eggs, honey, and fish.

How to Use It in Full Moon Magick:

  • Place a clove or bulb on her altar as an offering.
  • Use it in protection or banishing spells (especially powerful on the full moon, before releasing spells).
  • Add a bit of garlic to moon water or a ritual bath for strong cleansing (just a little — the smell is potent!).
  • Some witches leave garlic at a crossroads, as thanks after working with her.

The Magick of the Full Moon

The full moon represents culmination, abundance, clarity, and power. This is an ideal time for manifestation and charging intentions, release and banishing spells, divination and psychic development, gratitude and celebration and most importantly, the charging and cleansing of sacred tools, crystals, and moon water.

General Correspondences

  • Colours: Silver, white, blue, purple
  • Herbs: Rose, lavender, sage, rosemary, mugwort, garlic (sacred to Hekate)
  • Crystals: Moonstone, selenite, clear quartz, labradorite, smoky quartz
  • Tarot: The Moon, High Priestess

Simple Full Moon Ritual for Beginners

  1. Prepare Your Space: Cleanse with sage or Palo Santo. Set up an altar with a silver or white candle, a moonstone or quartz crystal, a bowl of water (for moon water), herbs, and offerings (flowers, milk, honey).
  2. Ground & Centre: Stand barefoot if possible. Breathe deeply and visualise roots sinking into the earth. Feel yourself becoming one with the earth.
  3. Invoke the Moon: Face the moon (or a window) and say: "Lady Moon, full and bright, Lend your power to my rite. Illuminate what I must see, As I will, so mote it be."
  4. Release & Manifest: Write what you wish to release on paper, and burn it safely. Write manifestations and speak them aloud while holding a charged crystal.
  5. Charge Items for Later Use: Place crystals, tools, or moon water outside or on a windowsill.
  6. Close: Remember to thank the moon (and Hekate if you called her by name), ground excess energy and journal your insights.

Moon Water Tip: Make moon water by placing a covered jar of spring water under the full moon. Use it for baths, plants, or spells.
